...besides, D's going there in the fall. The least I can do is supply him with fun statistics to work with.

And as a quick aside, why did no one tell me that the meningococcal vaccine hurts like a mother? The doctor said it was just like a regular shot--that quick pinch and then the stomach-churning feeling of a foreign liquid entering your bloodstream. She failed to mention the excruciating and persistent pain that followed. I got the shot at ten this morning, and my entire left arm is still sore from about my collarbone to the middle of my forearm. And the pain keeps radiating down into the top of my left hand--it's like tennis elbow all over again. That or I've been having a heart attack all day.

Oh you think the PAIN of that shot is bad? Yeah? Do YA? Well I got news for you missy. I got that damned thing before I left for college like a GOOD little college freshman. And you know WHAT? IT WAS EFFING RECALLED. Yes, that's right: my vaccination was RECALLED. As if it was a faulty Ford car seat that ignites when the driver turns left onto a one way street at 4pm on an idle Tuesday.

Apparently the vaccination they gave me is only good for certain strands of menengitis. Luckily, it's the strands prevalent here in the states. But damn, if I ever want to go to Bangladesh, I am so screwed because I refuse to get that shot again.

And you know what the worst of it all is? I HAD menengitis. Before I got the shot. So I had to do BOTH. That is kick-you-in-the-crotch karma girl.

Aww, Lyn. *hugs* Getting either the shot or the infection is bad enough. Both? Not so much with the good.

Usually, people overstate the threat of the illness, but since it can kill you--and fast--colleges require it. It's purely in the name of self-interest. No college wants to have to deal with dead kids.

But seriously, recalled? I can't even imagine having to do this again.

I don't remember getting that shot, but I must have. *ponders* I probably blocked the experience out of my memory. :p

*offers lollipop* That makes you feel better, right? :P

The memory-blocking is probably right. Or at least, my memory of most of the painful experiences I've been through is pretty fuzzy.

*takes lollipop* Much better, thanks. :D

We get that shot when we're quite young over here. I still have a scar from it, ick.

Eww. It's not going to leave any sort of mark for me, but I can imagine that having that would not be fun. There's a debate over the vaccine's effectiveness in kids under 2-3 years old (yes, I read all the brochures while I was waiting for the nurse ;) ), and they're just now beginning to require it for school-age kids here. My little sister had to get one too a few weeks ago--of course, for her, it didn't hurt at all. :P
