And I survived the relatives. Am now in full-blown ice cream and alcohol recovery mode. Fortunately, my roommates are amazing people and only look at me like I'm crazy some of the time instead of all of it.

Also: I come bearing sonnets!

for [livejournal.com profile] bm1893, who requested "Robin Hood, the new BBC version" and who received in exchange a sonnet from Djaq's POV about the twin she mentions in Brothers in Arms.

Becoming

His smile erased the caution from his eyes
until he saw the things I could not see:
the good, the joy, the pleasure to be had
between thick thighs or on a packed-dirt floor
where women swirled and caught his gentle gaze
and held him with the magic in their hands.

But my hands hold no magic, only cloth
ripped into rough-edged strips too late and soaked
with slippery, clotting blood. He smiles up
and whispers, choked, Alula, sister dear.

I bury him beneath my hair, shorn close
as his was, tight and bristling free from weight.
I take his name, lose mine to his cold lips
and bear his sword and scabbard on my hip.

Freefall

Come soar with me beneath a new-moon night
when demons sing and angels fear to fly,
when earthbound creatures tremble in their homes
and terror rides her winged horses high.

Come fall with me into a sun-scorched day
that promises of rain and wind and spring
that spreads into the endless afternoons
of summer, when our half formed thoughts take wing.

Come perch with me atop the sharpest rocks
our wings can reach, the highest thinnest air
our flight allows. And let us stare down then
at all the dreams we dreamed and could not bear.

And trust me, as we fill the empty space
below, that this is it, this time, this place.

Thanks for the prompt--it's something I never would have thought to do by myself, and it ended up being quite the interesting challenge. I'm glad you liked it!

I'm so happy you liked it, seriously. I was, as you may have guessed from the mini-disclaimer, concerned that I would say things that totally missed the point. It's nice to have reassurances from both the original requester and of course the original artist herself. (Speaking of which, the original art was beautiful, and as such, very easy to write from.)

Feel free to snag it--I don't mind at all. Thanks for stopping in to read. :)

Sorry--I just realized I hadn't responded to this. The finished artwork is gorgeous, and I'm honored to be included in your final presentation of it. :)
