xaaraMy computer arrived today in an innocuous FedEx box that sat out on my porch in the heat for at least an hour before my brother noticed it. The delivery man didn't even have the decency to ring the doorbell to tell us that he was dropping off something both fragile and heat-sensitive in a Washington summer, where heat and humidity reach dangerous levels on a daily basis.
I rushed the box inside and set it down in an air-conditioned room, where I let it cool down for a few minutes before going after it with a pair of scissors. Apparently, they design boxes specifically to baffle me, because I can never figure out how to open them. Just when I think I've figured it all out, that I've conquered them all, box designers get to work and figure out how to add a twist of cardboard and packaging tape intended to foil my attempts to free the box's contents. After fighting with the FedEx box and then with the interior Toshiba box, I finally pulled my computer away from its packaging and admired the beauty that was my silver and black baby.
(Aside: I need a name for it. I think it's a boy. My desktop was definitely a girl--Carla--but this laptop feels like it needs a male name. Hmm....)
The first time it booted up, all the originally installed programs were on the desktop, so I had to go through the computer and clean away the AOL, MSN, and Toshiba crap. And then I spent the next forty minutes downloading FireFox, Trillian, OpenOffice, Avast, and all the other programs I use on a regular basis.
Now I'm sitting here in my room, curled up in bed with my laptop, writing my first official laptop-based LJ post.
College? Bring it on.
