I'd planned to go to prom alone--with a bunch of friends, of course, but not with anyone. But then I was talking to my best friend last night and suddenly I was asking him to prom and he was accepting and I was thinking What the Hell? and then it was over and now I need a dress. Of course, being the most non-girly girl ever, I have not the faintest clue where to get a dress.

Girls on my flist (a.k.a. my entire flist): know of any good places to get a [preferably red] dress for something less than I might pay for a small house? Have you had any success with ordering off the internet, or do you usually go to specific department stores, or have you only found anything good ever at little dress shops? I'd greatly appreciate relation of any experiences you've had because I've never done this before and it feels strange.

Wow, I'm pathetic. :P

Well, I got my dress from Marshalls (they have some really nice stuff there). David's Bridal shop apparently has some good stuff (I don't know how much it costs though). I had never shopped for a prom dress before when I got mine, and I found having my mom along helped. And another friend of mine found that having her sisters along helped her. And other friends of mine have gone shopping with other friends. So just snag a girl friend with a good eye for color and go?

I've never ordered a dress online- and I wouldn't, simply because everything I've ordered online has fit weird. ;p I would definitely try small dress shops and department stores. And have fun :D

Yay for having a date for prom! When is it, by the way?

To tell you the truth?

I bought my prom dress at a consignment shop. I HATED everything in the stores, but the second hand dress was GORGEOUS. And a very nice price. ^_^

Yubs speaketh the truth. I haven't bought my formal dress yet, but I've found some really beautiful ones for great prices in second-hand shops. Good luck!

I've heard good things about Marshalls--I think I'm going to head over there as part of a general prom-based mall expedition with my sister. If there's anything I can be absolutely sure of, it's that my little sister won't let me near anything she even vaguely disapproves of. ;)

Thanks--this is a little crazy for me, the person notorious for wearing the first clothes that fall out of my closet in the morning. And prom's on June 4, so I still have a decent amount of time and am not quite panicking yet.

Yeah, I'm thinking about that, mostly because the dresses in stores are about a million dollars more than I'm comfortable paying for something I'll wear maybe twice. And I always find the coolest button-down shirts in the male section of our local thrift store--why not expand my horizons? ;)

*nods* Yubs is indeed very wise.

Beat.

Hehe.

Anyway, I'll definitely take a look in some of the local second-hand places. Thanks for the input. :)

I don't understand how people can spend $600 on a dress. I really don't. :p

Glad I could help. And it sounds like you're in good hands with your sister ;p

It's crazy for me too. I actually got the dress I ended up deciding to wear to prom in October, when I got my homecoming dress. So I was set when everyone else I knew was running around like nuts. And I'm pretty darn close to you- I just pull stuff out of the laundry basket :D

Your prom's June 4? Wow, when do you guys get out of school? I get out the ninth. And my prom is tonight!
