Dec. 28th, 2004 09:57 pmI'm fairly certain everyone on my flist has heard about and mentioned the earthquake/tsunami disaster in Asia, so I won't express the extent of my horror at the wholesale carnage there. It will suffice to say that my prayers, which are seldom given to people I've never met, are solidly concentrated on that part of the world.
However, I do find this article interesting:
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The massive earthquake that devastated parts of Asia permanently moved the tectonic plates beneath the Indian Ocean as much as 98 feet, slightly shifting islands near Sumatra an unknown distance, U.S. scientists said on Tuesday.
Also, this article has some information about the rather irregular rotation of the earth:
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The deadly Asian earthquake may have permanently accelerated the Earth's rotation -- shortening days by a fraction of a second -- and caused the planet to wobble on its axis, U.S. scientists said on Tuesday.
I apologize if a bunch of other people have already linked to this information, but as a science nerd, I had to share.
As a human, I'm appalled by the extent of the damage, but as a scientist, I find the whole thing fascinating. I feel a little bit guilty for my interest in the geological aspects of the disaster. I can't satisfy both halves of my conscience at once.
Huh.
In other news, I watched Disco Demolition tonight. It's a documentary about the infamous Disco Demolition promotion at Comiskey Park in 1979, and it's quite highly entertaining. If you want a preview, the site is here. If you have an hour or so, definitely hop down to your local video store and rent it.
