The sound of music
Jun. 12th, 2004 10:55 pmMetro fare to gig: $1.20
Photocopies of music: $3.75
Hard plastic mallets: $18
Concert dress: $49.99
Playing for an auditorium full of autistic people: Priceless
Our "real" concert is tomorrow, but playing for the residents of a nearby home for the mentally disabled was as - if not more - rewarding than playing for seasoned members of the classical music community. There's something elemental and almost primeval about performing for people who are only there to hear the music, not to appreciate it.
And we played the Goldberg variation of Bach's "Prelude in C Minor," which is one of the few pieces of music that makes me cry every time I listen to it. It's a bit embarrassing to play the tympani and fight back tears at the same time, but seeing the audience as affected as I am was beautiful. Music is truly a universal language, especially to those with no means by which to speak.
