I went to see Reagan's funeral procession today, seeing as I live within walking distance of the National Cathedral. It wasn't nearly as impressive as his arrival in D.C. from California, but it was somehow more real. Perhaps it was the clichéd drizzle that soaked me before I realized I was wet, or the classic chill of the cloudy day. Or maybe it was because I found a spot to watch directly across from the Naval Observatory, where men in uniform stood and saluted as the casket passed. Then I watched a large segment of the funeral services on TV. The services were interesting in a way, but I thought the short eulogies made by the Reagan children later to be much more insightful and touching. And I love military funerals - they are full of such rich symbolism and layered with hundreds of years of meaning.

It's been raining on and off here for the past week. I haven't been able to stray too far from the house in case another downpour begins, and the library is closed on Fridays. So I've been sitting at home, reading mostly, listening to music, and scrapbooking. Oh, and listening to my sister go on about her FLASH (don't know what it stands for - means sex ed) class. I told her to ask all sorts of embarrassing questions and even suggested some. I've found that the most effective way to make teachers uncomfortable is to ask for clarification, elaboration, or repetition of points they've already made. What I have to ask a teacher is whether puberty makes all girls annoying or whether it's just my 12-year-old sister who I love but am constantly ticked off at.

Random comment that said sister made today: "I saw a nun walking down the street on my way home with the same shoes that I have."

She noticed her shoes? She sees a nun and the first thing she notices is her shoes? If she saw Orlando Bloom she'd probably say, "I saw Orlando Bloom, and his shirt didn't quite match his pants." Or maybe, "I saw Orlando Bloom wearing khaki pants and these black shoes that just didn't go at all."

Please shoot me right now if I was ever like that.

Oh, and in case you haven't heard the song I'm listening to right now, you can find here or by typing Bella Ciao into a Media Player search and clicking on the link that appears with the URL socialpolicy.ucc.ie. It's really a great song - a partisan call to arms against oppression in WWII Italy. People still sing it all over Italy.
